Ground Floor Offices at Prudential Building
Project Overview

Project Overview
Stephen Jabs was commissioned to undertake the redecoration and modernisation of the ground-floor office space in the iconic Prudential Building, located in the heart of Bristol’s bustling Wine Street. This Grade-listed building, known for its architectural grandeur and historical significance, demanded a high-end, sensitive approach that blended heritage with a contemporary aesthetic.
Design Vision
The primary objective was to deliver a modern and classy fit-out that honoured the building’s Victorian roots while creating a bold, forward-looking office environment suitable for a dynamic city-centre workspace.
Key Features
- Striking Matt Black Ceilings:
One of the standout design elements was the use of a matt black ceiling. This not only created a dramatic visual impact but served to highlight the exposed galvanised mechanical and electrical services, creating a deliberate contrast that celebrated the building’s industrial functionality. - Heritage Window Restoration:
The space is graced by a large number of original Victorian sash windows. These oversized windows now serve as a focal point, flooding the space with natural light while retaining the elegance of 19th-century architecture. - Modern Colour Scheme:
A carefully curated, contemporary colour palette was selected to give the office a crisp, professional tone while ensuring it remained inviting and warm. Neutral tones were paired with deep accents, providing a refined backdrop that complements the historical detailing of the building.
Challenges and Solutions
Working within a listed building in a busy city centre presented a range of logistical and conservation-related challenges. Coordination with heritage officers and managing disruption within the building required meticulous planning and execution. Stephen Jabs and his team ensured that all redecoration was sympathetic to the original features, with modern interventions that enhanced rather than overshadowed the existing architecture.
Outcome
The result is a striking transformation that positions the Prudential Building’s ground floor as a leading example of modern office space within a heritage context. The redecoration successfully merges old and new, preserving the building’s character while delivering a fit-for-purpose, inspirational workspace in one of Bristol’s most prominent addresses.
